Samurai Love
or what's up with the Li/Yukito Sakura/Tomoyo thang

Okay, this is just a theory I heard, but it seemed to make sense. Hopefully I'll be able to link to a more detailed and researched explanation soon.

First, it's about love/admiration/attractiveness *not* love/sex/gay/lesbian. The attraction of same-sex characters is an indication that the object of affection (Sakura, Yukito, Mizuki-sensei) are/will be powerful people in the story, along the lines of a hero/heroine, or someone with a lot of power, even if they don't show it from the moment they appear on screen.

In order for Sakura, the heroine of our story, to be considered worthy of achieving her greatness, she needs to be an ideal in a certain sense. An ideal is admired by everyone, both male and female. If she wasn't this ideal, the audience would not believe that she was capable of accomplishing everything she did, and when it comes down to the final judgement, she has to embody this ideal in order to succeed in the eyes of the viewer.

So, enter Tomoyo. She is attracted to Sakura, and follows her around with the video camera. Putting the 'love' between them aside, Tomoyo is a good friend, and very valuable to Sakura in many situations. Tomoyo is also the embodiment of an ideal - she knows she cannot be the one Sakura loves, so she will do everything she can to see that Sakura is happy. This selflessness is highly regarded and makes Tomoyo more than just a Sakura-fangirl.

As for Mizuki-sensei, as soon as Sakura sees her, she says what a beautiful person she is, and goes googoo-eyed whenever the mysterious teacher is near. HINT to audience - Mizuki-sensei is a powerful person - worthy of attraction.

Same goes for Yukito. Sakura's attraction is pretty obvious and easily accepted: a young girl has a crush on her brother's friend. Li, however, also has a crush on Yukito; he runs away, blushes, gives Yukito gifts, gets jealous when he sees Sakura and Yukito together, etc., etc., etc. HINT to audience - Yukito is much more than he seems.

So what's with the Samurai Love title? It sounded cool. And, a lot of this is based on the ideal of a warrior, and the samurai is the Japanese ideal of the ideal warrior.
